Renewal Timeline

  • 60 days before expiry: DAFZA sends first renewal notice
  • 30 days before expiry: DAFZA sends second notice
  • Recommended: initiate renewal 30-45 days before to allow document collection
  • Payment must clear before license expiry date

Late Fee Escalation

  • Day 1-30 late: AED 250/day penalty (~$68/day)
  • Day 31-90 late: license suspended — cannot conduct business, establishment card and visas at risk
  • Day 91+ late: license cancelled. Reinstatement requires fresh application + all back fees + AED 10,000 penalty (~$2,720)

Consequences of Suspension

License suspension cascades:

  • Establishment Card becomes invalid → no new visas issuable
  • Existing visas remain valid until their own expiry, but cannot be renewed until license reinstated
  • Bank accounts may be frozen (banks receive automatic notifications from DAFZA)
  • Any signed contracts under the license become legally questionable

Compliance Additions (2024+)

  • Corporate Tax registration — required within 3 months of license issue; free at FTA
  • ESR (Economic Substance Regulations) — annual notification + report if operating in one of 9 relevant activities
  • UBO (Ultimate Beneficial Owner) — annual disclosure to DAFZA registrar
  • Audited financial statements — mandatory since 2024, must be filed with DAFZA within 6 months of fiscal year end

Cost Optimization

  • Multi-year renewal: DAFZA offers ~8% discount on 3-year prepayment
  • Audit fee: 3-way quote comparison saves 30-40% typically
  • Consultant for renewal: not required if straightforward; save $500-1,000 by DIY
